THE STORY

Carthage, on the brink of revolt.

Carthage, on the brink of revolt.

Carthage, on the brink of revolt.

Carthage can no longer pay the mercenaries who fought for it. As revolt threatens the city, Salammbô, daughter of the general Hamilcar, tries to prevent a massacre. On the other side, Mâtho is determined to save his men. Their encounter sparks a love that soon brings them into conflict with Hamilcar’s rule.

WHY SALAMMBÔ

WHY SALAMMBÔ

WHY SALAMMBÔ

Salammbô has been with me for a long time. Flaubert led me to imagine a Carthage of light, violence and desire. I want to enter this city, give it faces, voices, a life of its own. To convey what it means to belong to a world you believe will last forever.

At the heart of the film are Mâtho, who fought for a city that rejects him, and Salammbô, torn between her ties to that city and her attraction to him. Their fates bring the violence of history into intimate focus. Through them, I want to look at what power demands of people, what it consumes and what it leaves behind.

This ancient story moves me because of what it reveals about us: the fragility of our societies, our dependencies, our struggle to see those who pay the price of our power.

To begin Monelli with Salammbô is to bring together what drives me: literature, the power of images, and the desire to give a voice to lives swept up by history.
